The history of hop growing in the Lower Savinja Valley

The Lower Savinja Valley is considered the cradle of Slovenian hop growing and one of the most important European regions for hop production. Due to the favorable climate, fertile soil, and diligence of the locals, hop production began to develop here in the 19th century and soon became a key economic sector in this area.

Hops have marked the lives of many generations, shaped the cultural landscape, and left an important mark on the local identity. The tradition of hop growing and processing has been upgraded over the decades with knowledge, technology, and innovations, while remaining closely linked to the heritage and customs of the valley.

Today, the Lower Savinja Valley proudly maintains the title of “land of green gold”, as hops are still its symbol, a source of economic development, and recognition in the world.
