Savinja Valley

Attractions, Museums and Landmarks of the Lower Savinja Valley

In the heart of the mountains, in the beautiful Logar Valley, the Savinja River springs to life in the Rinka Waterfall, connecting the places of the Upper and Lower Savinja Valley, all the way to its confluence with the Sava River at Zidani Most. Along the Savinja River, the Vrbovec Museum from Nazarije offers a display of forestry and woodworking heritage, in the Mozirski Gaj flower park, millions of flowers bloom from spring to autumn, the Motorcycle Museum in Vransko is something special, and in Polzela there is Komenda Castle and Šenek Park. The former Roman road in Šempeter left behind the remains of a Roman necropolis, and the underground beauties of the Savinja Valley are revealed in the Pekel Cave, in the center of Žalec, the Ecomuseum of Hop Growing and Brewing, and the Green Gold Beer Fountain, and we could go on.

The symbol of the Lower Savinja Valley is hops, as the valley has been known for more than a century and a half for hops, friendly and hospitable people, local food and drinks. It is surrounded by a soft wreath of hills and is rich in natural and cultural sights. In the central part, where it spreads into a fertile plain below Letuš, it shows its true wealth. Hop growing flourished here in the 19th century. People around the world were drinking more and more beer, we have had the Laško Brewery since 1825, and thus hops, as an important ingredient of this golden drink, quickly gained in price.

The experts of the Institute for Hop Research and Brewing of Slovenia, based in the center of the Savinja Valley, in Žalec, also deserve a lot of credit for the development of the hop plant, as they have been taking care for more than 60 years that hop growers produce more varieties of hops, which they carefully developed at the Institute and also professionally helped hop growers who have decided and are still deciding to plant new noble varieties.
